Release updates – Plex Media Server, Plex for Win8 and Plex/Web

, | 05 Feb 2013 | by 96 Comments

Ah, the inexorable march of progress. We have three more releases to talk about today, with lots of goodies. And if you’re getting bored of hearing about the media server, Win8 app, and Plex/Web, you’re in for a treat, because the next blog post is going to be about something new, and very exciting. Promise.

That’s not to say that these updates themselves aren’t exciting. We’ve been doing  a lot of work on the next-generation transcoder in the media server lately. Currently in use for PlexSync and the Win8 app, it’ll soon be available for iOS and Android and Plex/Web as well, as it offers many advantages over the old transcoder. For starters, the new version supports burning PGS and VOBSUB subtitle formats, which has been requested for – literally – years. Secondly, it should offer much better performance, stability, compatibility with codecs, should fix issues with A/V sync, and many other things. Last, but not least, it leverages a powerful server-side profile mechanism which will soon be used universally for DLNA, PlexSync, and “live” transcoding. We’re building the most advanced media server on the planet here, and the new transcoder is at the heart of it!

Here’s a full list of changes in the latest Plex Media Server, available from here:

  • NEW: Greatly improved (Sync and Win8) transcoder subtitle burning: support SSA and SMI, fix crashes, fix subtitle sync when resuming video.
  • FIX: Scanning TV shows near the root directory of a volume didn’t work reliably.
  • FIX: Send Accept-Ranges: bytes HTTP header when answering requests for media. Fixes Win8 seeking in media.
  • FIX: DTS audio inside MP4 container could be incorrectly identified as mp4a during media analysis.
  • FIX: Transcoding certain media files could be pathologically slow. Thanks to Rodger for helping us diagnose the issue!
  • FIX: Transcoding video audio from MP3 to AAC would fail in some rare cases.
  • FIX: A/V sync issues transcoding Smooth Streaming to Windows 8 Store app.
  • FIX: Actor thumbnails weren’t being offered correctly to sync clients.
  • FIX: Removed unnecessary logging when running transcoder.
  • FIX: Add more logging when Win8 app loopback exemption can’t be added.
  • FIX: When a media asset is uploaded, it becomes the default.
  • FIX: Sync item status could be prematurely reported as complete.
  • FIX: Added iPad mini sync profile.
  • NEW: (API) Allow converting SMI to SRT (format=srt).
  • FIX: (Windows) Large log files when number of library paths exceeded 64.
  • FIX: (Sync) A few issues with sync status not being reported correctly.
  • FIX: (Transcoder) An A/V sync issue affecting Win8 app.

Leveraging the new transcoder, and all these other fixes, is the latest update of Plex for Windows 8. It’s taken us a few releases, but at this point media playback support on the app is really super good, and it’s able to play lots of content with remuxing, which (given our support for throttling on the server side), means awesome quality video with minimal CPU usage. Lots of other new stuff, including more keyboard navigation and a cool media information popup, and many bug-fixes.

Plex/Web also got a massive update. A giant, thundering, epic update, featuring a redesigned home screen, greatly simplified navigation, and lots of other goodies. Look at this beautiful new dashboard!

We’ll be back very soon, but until then, I’ll leave with with two photos of Barkley, who has been your faithful Plex mascot for the last five years. The first one finds him as a puppy, with giant paws and a feisty disposition.

As you can see, he’s grown in size quite a bit. (Sweetheart, don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

Great news on the updates and loving barklay!

  2. Brett February 5th, 2013 9:14 pm

New Plex/Web client is much improved, and very easy to use, I love it – fantastic work!

  3. ian February 5th, 2013 9:16 pm

I gotta say, the latest Win8 build and server back end has been awesome.

I had my Surface running into the TV in my office and it simply rocked.

  4. ube February 5th, 2013 9:32 pm

Hm, did an upgrade of my ubuntu PMS some days ago and I’m apparently running 0.9.7.12.408-74b62af and judging from the name of the package at /getplex this release is 0.9.7.12.407-db37d6d.. So, has the wrong package been distributed in the deb-repository?

  5. Peter February 5th, 2013 9:35 pm

    Honestly, guys.
Is MS giving you a lot of money, so that you are pushing their newest OS that nobody really wants?

  6. uberman February 5th, 2013 9:35 pm

Really looking forward to what’s coming next and this looks solid (my guess is trailers). One minor bug with Plex/Web: at least in the recently added list, the big tile is mislabeled. I added an episode from season 8 of a season yet it reads Season 1, Episode 8 (not unlike the picture above with It’s Always Sunny where I imagine the episode is wrongly labeled as well)

  7. drh February 5th, 2013 9:41 pm

Seriously hoping for more stability, I’ve been running the latest PMS but had to revert back to the old Plex Client because PHT was getting slower and eventually crashing after a few days of uptime.

  8. Augusto February 5th, 2013 9:46 pm

    Thank’s team!!

  9. Thomas Wood February 5th, 2013 9:55 pm

Thanks for the update! Quite literally refresh this website everyday for new information. Can’t wait for some of the new community requested additions (in the plex pass area) and everything would be 100% complete for me. Not that i’m complaining. Keep up the great work!

  10. elan February 5th, 2013 9:57 pm

    @Peter: no :)

  11. Peter February 5th, 2013 10:14 pm

    OK, glad to hear that..

  12. MTII February 5th, 2013 10:36 pm

I especially love the newest Plex/Web update. That part of Plex is simply awesome!

While I wont complain or call the updates boring, I am looking forward to some more exiting news. For us PlexPass’ers this is old news, and I honestly think that you need to step it up in terms of PlexPass extras (you don’t wanna end up like the Windows Vista Extra, I hope :)

  13. elstreif February 5th, 2013 11:20 pm

Great work! Love the refinements to Plex/Web.

  14. Cunningcory February 5th, 2013 11:39 pm

What happened to the update that changes Plex Media Center to Plex Theater and fixes all the audio/video issues that have been plaguing that client for months? Having to change half of my video files to audio offset -250ms is really, really, really annoying. Please push this update out!

  15. John February 5th, 2013 11:43 pm

    Hi,

Was hoping for news about a new android version (plexsync)…

  16. drh February 6th, 2013 12:02 am

I somewhat agree with MTII, the biggest feature for me would be the ability to allow guests to visit use my library through the plexweb without having to sign up and not being able to run-a-mock playing with administrative features, a “plexweb player” if you like.

Fixes & development for other platforms like linux and windows is of no interest to most long term plex users who predominantly were iOS & OS X based anyway. Plex was essentially XBMC for the Apple crowd.

I must admit, XBMC frodo is sounding interesting now it supports livetv & DVR functionality, don’t get me wrong, I’m Plex through & through, but XBMC seems to have stepped up its game in the last 12 months, I suspect it might have something to do with seeing the advancements the Plex team were making with the library re-write and the deals with LG etc!

  17. Jleagle February 6th, 2013 12:09 am

I started a deep scan at work and when i got home everything looked different which surprised me, and couldn’t see any news of the update anywhere! Now it all makes sense :)

  18. cryptochrome February 6th, 2013 1:17 am

Looks like Barkley received some massive upgrades over the years as well.

  19. Hank February 6th, 2013 1:23 am

Wonderful update – an improvement on transcoding is always welcomed. I hope this will help with playing some of 1080P files on my android device?

  20. Legua February 6th, 2013 1:50 am

Plex/Web: The sorting defaults to ‘All’ under respective section, but the ‘On deck’ and ‘Recently added’ are now tucked away under the options on the left-hand side, but doesn’t seem to remember the selected sorting when switching between sections (TV and Movies for example) as it always defaults to ‘All’.

For me, this is quite the step back in usability as I like to populate the visible area with all of the recently added TV or Movies.

What was once a one-click process is now a three-step process: open options, select Recently added, close options.

And I can’t seems to figure out why the menu is now on the left-hand side. It’s fairly disruptive having *all* of the content/media move and reorder when you open it. A more clean experience, in my opinion, would just push the content ‘outside’ the window (see the popular Facebook app for iOS/Android as an example).

Thanks for otherwise a great and truly useful program!

  21. Bob February 6th, 2013 2:07 am

Any chance of adding back the “Recently Added” at the top?

We use that all the time and today it was hidden away in the options, ok not a great problem to
    click open it,
    click to select it,
    then click to close it,
but I liked it at the top one click and I was there.

As I say its used all the time here I have plex on all the TV via mini android computers. We use “air mice” to control the pointer on screen they are not that good.

This new update just makes things that bit harder.

    Bob

  22. Hilbe February 6th, 2013 2:26 am

Was really hoping this was a Plex for Android with Sync update :) Still love the update, but a guy can dream right?

  23. Yurisaki February 6th, 2013 2:36 am

You need to add Japanese language support!
Sick of seeing squares sliver my media

  24. MTII February 6th, 2013 2:54 am

BTW, “We’re building the most advanced media server on the planet here…”

    You already did!

  25. Scott R February 6th, 2013 2:55 am

@Peter: I saw on the bottom of the Plex homepage that there was a new blog entry and new software releases, clicked over, read it, and had the same thought as you. Glad to hear from elan that this is not the case, though. I have a Windows 7 Media Center that I use for DVR and have no intention of upgrading it to 8 after reading of negative experiences (and no new functionality) from other W7MC users.

@elan: I started a thread in the Plex members section outlining what I believe to be a really easy way for you guys to add live TV / DVR support. Please take a look at it and reply their with your thoughts. I think you’d get a lot of new paying Plex members if you pursued it.

  26. plakna February 6th, 2013 3:01 am

    Wow, great as always :)

  27. Geo February 6th, 2013 3:59 am

Wow!, thanks for the updates, can’t wait to see what is next. You guys rock!

  28. Doinkmeister February 6th, 2013 4:35 am

Thanks for the many improvements on the windows 8 app.
To anyone still running windows 7. I would say it is worth upgrading to windows 8 just for this great plex app.

  29. Martin February 6th, 2013 4:42 am

@ Elan, could you please provide an update as to using PlexSync to sync content to iOS devices without having to publish the Plex Media Server to the Internet?

I appreciate that you’re busy, but could you folks PLEASE get the iOS client syncing properly over the LAN instead of worrying about Windows. I’m a Lifetime subscriber and I’d like to get my content on my iPad thanks.

    -Martin

  30. Paul February 6th, 2013 4:48 am

The work on Plex is awesome. Dev’s keep up the great work and pace. Everyone else needs to calm down, it doesn’t matter which OS they focus on, they work on all of them and make great progress all the time. IOS has syncing, android is next and windows 8 is making great strides and all are doing it quickly not to mention the constant server updates. Some of you are just either greedy or feel entitled :(, I paid just like everyone else and I have to say I’m getting my money’s worth. Keep it up Plex team!

  31. Melanie1001 February 6th, 2013 6:18 am

Your app is amazing, from the desktop to the web to mobile. Just wanted to say a big thank you for your awesome amazingness. And hug Barkley for me, that’s one cute doggie.

  32. xain09 February 6th, 2013 6:42 am

Great! Thanx for all the work !

  33. Justin Ross February 6th, 2013 7:50 am

Excellent. Logging into my server to download the update now!

  34. Justin Ross February 6th, 2013 7:51 am

Oh yeah, any word on an official Raspberry Pi release? XBMC doesn’t cut it for me anymore. :(

  35. Sling February 6th, 2013 8:30 am

hopefully this means that plex media server will work from a Synology DS213 +
not only the NAS with Intel processor

  36. elan February 6th, 2013 8:54 am

@Cunningcory: Almost certainly fixed in Plex Home Theater, and released for everyone when we feel like it’s in better shape than existing release.

  37. Ben February 6th, 2013 9:09 am

Still no ability to force re-downloading of images? The know bug where images show damages ( with part of the grayed out ), and plex server is unable to “refresh” those images to download again.

Its actually very annoying, when you can not be 100% that all your images will correct loaded. Picking a alternative poster ( if there is one available ) is not the solution, its just sidestepping the problem. Strangely XBMC does not have this problem.

Technically, its already a 2 year old problem, that plagues people with slow connections or unstable connections.

  38. Chris February 6th, 2013 9:34 am

My Plex/Web manual update always fails. It never actually updates when there is one available? Any suggestion on how to fix this?

  39. Chris February 6th, 2013 9:36 am

Nevermind…….seems Avast Anti-virus doesn’t like Plex trying to auto-update itself. Disabled Avast for 10 mins and Plex/Web updated fine.

  40. Sudhir Khanger February 6th, 2013 9:37 am

Please merge Plex Media Server and myPlex in one website.

  41. moo083 February 6th, 2013 9:58 am

Great news! Is there any word on the addition of playlists?

I have heard tons of people request it in the forums, and the team has been awfully silent on it.

Creating a list of Halloween Episodes/Movies, Christmas Episodes, Pixar Movies, et cetera would be awesome but currently not possible.

  42. qh February 6th, 2013 10:52 am

    Sorry, what am I missing?

Where do we download the latest Plex Media Server release?

  43. qh February 6th, 2013 11:12 am

Please disregard my last comment. I am already running 9.7.12 which I upgraded too a while back from the PlexPass Only forum (Pre-Release). Maybe mentioned the release version in the next blog postings? :)

  44. MK February 6th, 2013 12:24 pm

Awesome job, as always! Are you planning to release an updated Synology package as well?

  45. Eldee February 6th, 2013 1:29 pm

Are there any plans for local playlists or queueing of some sort? It’s particularly tricky for listening to music with plex since the options are- pick each song manually when one finishes, or listen to an entire album all the way through. Playlists are basic media player features, please give it to us! Awesome work and loving the updates!

  46. Simo February 6th, 2013 2:19 pm

    @Elan

I’m with @Legua and @Bob – can the ‘Recently Added’ filter be put back across the top were it was please, rather than hidden in the menu on the left? Thanks :)

  47. Russell February 6th, 2013 3:05 pm

    You guys rock!

  48. sraptor February 6th, 2013 3:12 pm

Where I can download the new update?

  49. mjbxx February 6th, 2013 8:04 pm

“Recently Added” needs to be readily available on the home screen. Now you have to shoot through hoops to get to it. Please revert back to ease of discovery before this update.

  50. Cunningcory February 6th, 2013 8:29 pm

Thanks for responding. Plex has revolutionized the way I consume media. A few nips and tucks and it’ll be perfect!

  51. Steven Davis February 6th, 2013 9:45 pm

Would really like to see he Decade filter added to the Plex/Web… and again with large libraries not being able to see what is in the Trash at a glance is very inconvenient. At least with the old OSX desktop software (and yes I know it’s still there) you could see if something/anything was in the Trash.

Looking forward to the update. I hope it’s news on long awaited features like user profiles, better handling of multiple items (director’s cut/theatrical cut), etc.

  52. Kevin February 7th, 2013 12:28 am

    Hey great work as usual.
…But i have to agree with others….why work on the Win 8 platform that is hardly being used? I think we would all like updates for things people want to see and clients not getting as much love as they should.
I for one would like at leaset the below:
    - 5.1 sound(in MKV) through IOS/ATV via Airplay, that has been promised for months was going to be added to PMS
    - A well over due update to the GTV client to bring it in line with the Win/OSX client and fix some stability (and maybe the DTS passthrough that was working in 2.1.1.1 but has since gone from NSZ-GS7)

    Cheers

  53. Kruisje February 7th, 2013 1:49 am

What about updates for the Google TV Plex version (not the android one)?

  54. dlk93 February 7th, 2013 6:29 am

Is there a way to play a random movie or a tv episode from a series or from any tv series

  55. o February 7th, 2013 7:33 am

Would love to see the full screen aspect ratio fixed in the flash player.

The web player is really nice, but only works for material in 16:9 in fullscreen, everything else is stretched and ugly.

The only browser it works fine in is safari and only on mac os

    Thanks

  56. brent February 7th, 2013 12:01 pm

I’d love to see some parental controls in the app.. maybe restricting usage on certain content ratings or collections. That way my 5 year old can watch a Disney movie without me having to worry about her watching something she shouldn’t.

  57. portugoose February 7th, 2013 6:42 pm

Are you guys aware of the issues people have been having with playing files with subtitles on thin clients? For at least two versions (0.9.7.11 and this newest release) I and many others have been unable to play files with subtitles on any ios device. There is at least one thread on this topic in the PMS forum. I have been following the thread and to my knowledge no DEV has commented on it as yet. I have to say that I have really enjoyed this product in the past. However, lately it seems like new releases just introduce problems that I never had before. The biggest for me is this issue with subtitles and the fact that all my custom artwork is lost in the new media server. What’s worse I am unable to add custom art of my own in Safari 5.1.7. My only option is to add an url (which doesn’t work either). I hate to complain too loudly about something which I have been enjoying for free, but I have come to expect better from you guys. Please let me know if anyone is at least aware of the subtitles problem. Thank you.

  58. Russ February 7th, 2013 9:28 pm

Thank you guys for keeping us updated, I especially love the updates to the web client. You guys rock, can’t wait for the new exciting feature!

  59. Silvio Requena February 7th, 2013 11:25 pm

I love plex! I am sure that I will be using right now but there is a problem. It is a tinny problem, plex doesn’t have the xbmc subtitle addon that has xbmc. I know for a factura that there are a lot of people that are still using xbmc only for this reason. I am not a developer but I think that is not a very difficult feature to Develop. It would be amazing., de Please think about it i’d love to use this program again

  60. TheThreemagi February 8th, 2013 5:51 am

“Currently in use for PlexSync and the Win8 app, it’ll soon be available for iOS and Android and Plex/Web as well, as it offers many advantages over the old transcoder. For starters, the new version supports burning PGS and VOBSUB subtitle formats, which has been requested for – literally – years.”

I’m just looking for some clarification on this comment. Is the new version being commented about here the one currently available for plexsync, or an update that will come out when the new transcoder is used for streaming and sync?

  61. Vica February 8th, 2013 9:10 am

Please Support to Qnap ARM processor

  62. Jack February 8th, 2013 10:19 am

Do you have some kind of privacy policy?

I noticed that you use Google Analytics and some beacon.js javascript in Plex/Web. Do you send all that folklore video collection over to Google?

    Thanks

  63. elan February 8th, 2013 2:29 pm

Jack: this has been discussed quite a bit (e.g. http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/46481-tracking-code/page__view__findpost__p__351361 ). If you don’t like what we track (which isn’t nefarious at all), you can disable GA tracking via a plug-in.

  64. elan February 8th, 2013 2:30 pm

@TheThreemagi: yes, currently used for PlexSync.

  65. elan February 8th, 2013 2:32 pm

@portugoose ~ I’ve replied in there, we’re trying to gather more data. If you have that data (when it stopped working, sample media + subs, etc.) please email me.

  66. tim February 8th, 2013 2:56 pm

Did somthing happen that would make my Roku not find the server? I have tried for a couple hours to get it to work and it’s just not finding the server. I had it working for several months with ease but now no luck.

    Thansk

  67. haim February 10th, 2013 4:43 am

what about hebrew subtitles? (srt or sub format)
it never worked for me… (with minix android player)

  68. miketee February 10th, 2013 5:43 pm

when will there be an official ubuntu pmc? I do not want to use wine, and i just tried out the compile made by gewalker, it was nice but still far away. And why not just make a plex distro.. ?

  69. nextwave February 12th, 2013 8:12 am

This is much needed on QNAP ARM servers not just the Intel x86.

  70. jebrum February 13th, 2013 6:29 am

I would love to see a proper Windows Phone 8 app rather than the WP7 one… As it is I can’t use my phone as a remote.

  71. johnfordummies February 13th, 2013 6:44 pm

What happened to the ability to fix incorrect matches or posters from plexweb? I’m running server 0.9.7.3, and since plexweb 0.9.9.9 I can’t fix or edit any media…

  72. Luke February 13th, 2013 7:25 pm

Sorry to say, as much as I try to use the plex web version, I cannot get use to it.
please add an option in the menu to open the none web version. without having to press alt, it’s really annoying.

I fine opening plex in my web browser a bit intrusive. less is more!

Staying with V 0.9.6.9 until an option to open plex(non web) without pressing alt.
I can’t see it happening anytime soon, because it’s been requested a few times but not implemented.

  73. Bishal February 17th, 2013 3:35 pm

This update is very good and feel better. I work perfectly with window PC but having issue with Ubuntu. After this upgrade on ubuntu 12.10, The plex doesn’t start. I think there is a bug. And I found that few user are having this issue after upgrade. There is temp fix, which is you need to stop plexmediaserver from terminal server and start plexmediaserver. But you need do this everytime when you reboot your PC. I hope there will be upgrade for linux to fix this bug.

  74. Ed von Richtoven February 17th, 2013 7:10 pm

Just performed the “epic” upgrade on my debian linuxbox….plexmediaserver now will not work via my browser and port 32400. Sounds like the epic upgrade might have screwed with my IP tables?? Or is the Ubuntu .deb file NOT working on Debian Wheezy??? Plex is now dead on my linuxbox and I’m looking forward to a fix..but when? How?

  75. Ben February 17th, 2013 8:49 pm

I’d just like to second, that I agree with Bob…
“Any chance of adding back the “Recently Added” at the top?

We use that all the time and today it was hidden away in the options, ok not a great problem to
    click open it,
    click to select it,
    then click to close it,
but I liked it at the top one click and I was there.”

However, I believe there is a cleaner way to make just about everyone happy in this area…
I believe the queue should either replace the ‘On Deck’ section, or ‘On Deck’ should be manually controlled (similar to an Instant Queue on Netflix… or at least allow for user-created filters which would choose the On Deck videos to be adjustable in the settings…)
    OR
Perhaps Queue and On Deck should be integrated into a one simple Queue, with the bookmark/myplex queue options still adding web-content video, however the bookmarklet/email/chrome add-on also able to add MOVIES/SHOWS from a server using the same method (if possible) or similar means…. similar to the way collections can be made perhaps?
…allow me to select several TV episodes/an entire series/a few movies and click the myPlex queue extension to add it into the Queue – and, in my opinion, that feature (as well as the integrated previously known as ‘on deck’ feature)would be perfected…
It would also allow a the clean look by not having additional filters at the top, such as recently added, on deck, and queue: just one, “Queue” (aka On Deck)
Viewing the Queue would have a simple way to select internet-only/TV Shows/Movies/All (to keep the essence of the Queue idea). As for the option side of things, users would have the ability of manually adding/removing both internet and local media to the queue, as well as a filter within Plex/Web and online ‘MyPlex’ options to auto-include certain items, perhaps a “MyPlex Queue” named option tab with:
[]recently aired [___] weeks or [##] episodes
[]recently added [___] weeks or [##] videos
[]Maximum videos in Queue [###] (Default is 50)
…just an example,(check boxes to enable, followed by # of weeks you’d like to include)… users would check what they’d want ‘the filter’ to include in the queue along with the # of weeks/# of videos, check if you want a max and the number – I just made up the default, maybe 100, I don’t know…

For the ultimate in customization, there could be an advanced query as well, using pseudo code that involves metadata and IF/OR/AND statements similar to those that Winamp, Foobar2000 and many other music based media players have come to almost perfect for displaying metadata and creating playlists based on syntax strings using metadata — and afterall, this would essentially be a customized playlist (if this was implimented, an advanced query could be added in order for users to set up their own filters as well and customize them however much their heart desires….
    http://media.winamp.com/main/help/50/atf/atf.htm
    http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Query_syntax
    http://winamp2foobar.blogspot.com/2008/10/filename-without-path-filename-full.html

So anyone could create custom filters / queries, similar to XBMC smart playlists – only without the need for a seperate xml file that XBMC requires… rather sticking to the easier one-line process similar to an advanced query builder / smart view playlists found in winamp and foobar2000 (of course, the more advanced queries may need to make use of a query builder, or code an advanced line manually – but this part is easy). This way if users choose, they can go crazy with the actors they love or genres of a specific decade… creating lists based on ratings, keywords in plot, tags, recently watched, not watched in past 6 months, etc etc etc…
    example:
    NEW{(smartgrouptype = mixed) (name = “Steven Seagal, Sheriff & Action Badass”)} LIST{(%actor% HAS “Steven Seagal”) AND ((%mediatype% IS movie) AND (%title% != (“Ticker” OR “Half Past Dead”)) AND (%year% BEFORE 2002)) OR ((%mediatype% IS tvshows) AND (%tvshow% contains “Lawman”))}

…. a ‘mixed’ group (Tv & movies) named ‘Steven Seagal, Sheriff & Action Badass’ containing movies w/ Steven Seagal from BEFORE 2002, not including Ticker or Half Past Dead, and the “Steven Seagal: Lawman” TV Shows.
(I’m not a huge Steven Seagal fan – but my mom is =D ?)
I’m not sure how difficult this would be, but it seems like it would solve a few different …issues isn’t even the work… preferences is better, a few different preferences among users to make the experience just a bit better and more enjoyable?? Just my opinion, of course just because it sounds easy to implement doesn’t mean I have any idea of the coding that’d be involved…

Not that it is a huge deal – and I love how easy it is to remotely access my server using my plex and Plex/Web!

Tho I am still confused a bit about Plex Media Server vs Plex/Web … I somewhat gather that Plex/Web is a Server/Client-in-one type arrangment? or that could be completely wrong…? I like the idea it is accessible through a browser – the ultimate in cross platform compatibility…. I can access the Plex/Web through myPlex online as long as my PC is on and logged into the myPlex account. The sharing features are also wonderful – to share family and other videos with my mom and dad simply by entering their email is great. It would, however, be very nice to clarify if Plex/Web can somehow act as a DLNA client similar to PMS?? Or when I share my library with them, are they strictly limited to accessing the video playback via a browser?? Or do they need their own Plex Client/Media Server and MyPlex account in order to share my content with their MyPlex account and then they use their downloaded Server for DLNA in order to watch content on their LG smart TV.

(on a side note: LG media link never did work as a Plex client for us after several attempts. Even when at first the correct server name would show up in green text on a list, trying to press enter and select it would cause a pop up stating something similar to error connection to PMS… I tried running both PMS and just the Plex Client after reading several posts regarding LG medialink and Plex, however this didn’t seem to make a difference. I thought it had to do with no UPnP settings on their new verizon router, but after changing these settings – at least I think they changed – it made no difference either. The server now no longer even showed up on a pop-up list to select, but rather media link went directly to a full-screen that said no server could be found.)

Sorry for a long post, but thanks for the great work!

    @Bishal

A search regarding installing plex media CLIENT (not server) on Ubuntu 12.10 involved downloading and BUILDING the program. I’m not sure what you mean by “The Plex” but since the Server is the only thing available for Linux download, I’ll assume you are refering to it. There are multiple programs I have downloaded for linux that I’ve had trouble installing on Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10… If they are in a Debian package, it usually installs fine – however any other type of file or compressed .bin, etc – and there are usually instructions specifically posted for the Ubuntu distro of linux on what needs to be done in the command line in order to download a compatible version from a different repository, or to rebuild the program into a more native installer for Ubunutu. Just my personal experience so far – it hasn’t been horrible, I’ve just learned to search ‘how to install XXXXXXXX on ubuntu 12′ and read before downloading from a 3rd party website, which has saved me some time.

    @miketee @Bishal
and anyone else regarding ubuntu pmC (CLIENT) – please give this thread a read… it has worked for 64 and 32 bit 12.04 and 12.10 distros:
    http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/49590-how-to-installing-plex-on-ubuntu-1210-64bit/

    @Luke
A web-based interface IS as unobtrusive as you can get…
I can totally understand if it is hard for you to get used to – however it blows my mind you are asking for code to be changed so you don’t have to press ALT, unless I’m missing something??? If that is correct – please, just press alt, it requires no extra effort. I, for one, am glad the interface is web-based… just like I hate Skype for taking up space as a separate, annoying program window that hates to be told to close, while Google talk (free calls) and Google hangouts (free video chat) will do the same and much much more for free without making me install more than a browser plugin and doesn’t add to the clutter of open windows. [in summary, pressing alt isn't something to complain about... its not even worth suggesting - honestly, if we can be realistic about it - the reason that a web browser is not only available, but looks relatively the same across every operating system... and you want a special option to open the interface in a separate window, when the option is already there for you? (alt)] not to be rude – sorry if it seems that way, but I guess I’m just shocked that you are actually bothered by it? just press it…

So please help and explain me how to upgrade to newer version? Thx in advance

  79. Bishal February 21st, 2013 3:51 pm

@Ben,First of all thank you for your respond. I am talking about PMS in ubuntu 12.10, It was all working fine with 0.9.7.11. but once I did a upgrade to 0.9.7.12, then only I am facing this problem. When I open plex via web it try to connect but it doesn’t connect. for the client I have roku, Android TV and Android phone. Client are able to connect but doesn’t display any content. So to make it working I go to terminal server and type sudo service plexmediaserver stop and type sudo service Plexmediaserver start, Then it works fine. Plex web display all the content and client also display all content. I will try the link you send me and I will let you know how it goes. Thank a lot.

@Ed von Richtoven, for the time being go to terminal and stop the PMS services and then start the PSM services, This will work fine, But if you restart your Ubuntu you need to do it again.
    Thanks

Hi, can anyone help? with this update still unable to ad custom artwork, (Plex Media Server on windows vista)There is no drag and drop feature and the Url option keeps giving message ‘There was an error uploading this artwork. Try again’

If anyone has any clues, please help

Also can this option be used for Artist Poster in a music section? This function would make it perfect for me
    Many Thanks

  82. Ben February 25th, 2013 8:08 pm

    @ Bishal

That link is for the Plex Media CLIENT – not for the server. IF you notice on the download page, along top are the SERVER downloads…
for Winows, Mac, Linux, and NAS appliances.

For the CLIENT/PLAYER section below that (Plex Media Center, not server) only Windows and Mac OS X have the Media Center available to download (not counting the 3 major smart phone OS’s and the ‘players’ built into devices such as roku or the typically non-functioning LG Media Link… however these players are not always exactly like Plex Media Center… I am talking about the Plex Media Center Official application for Windows/Mac). And under the download area for the Plex Media Center (client) there is no option for Linux….

I thought THAT (The Media Center) is what you were having problems with – like you were using a linux based box and trying to install Plex Media Center onto it – which there is no official download for. The link I provided gives simple copy & paste terminal commands, that if I recall download the latest source for Plex Media Center (client) and then COMPILEs the program within Linux so you are about to install it after the computer compiles it (which obviously takes quite a bit longer than an install – up to several hours on a slower cpu).

I didn’t realize your issues was with Plex Media SERVER (PMS)… You might want to try sticking with the 12.04 LTS release of Ubuntu??? unless there is something particular or a specific feature you want from 12.10? I mention this just because I have run into a few issues myself that seemed fairly random with an old PC running 12.10, yet the same issues weren’t a problem on 2 other older PCs running Ubuntu 12.04 and 9.10…. (wonder if I should upgrade the 9.10 or just leave it be…. mainly is for niece & nephew to browse web and play games)

  83. Ben February 25th, 2013 8:30 pm

    @Paul –
IF I’m understanding correctly you don’t even see the drag and drop?? Open your plex media manager – which should bring you to plex/web interface. Then If I click on a show, where the plot and seasons come up – I can click on the picture and the box pops up right away to ‘select artwork’, with the drag and drop feature being already highlighted…. drag and drop only works when dragging and dropping from your folder (like if you’re in windows explorer under my pictures and you drag and drop it into that box)… the options provided below if you try to drag and drop give an error – these you simply click to select. honestly, just selecting ‘choose an image’ instead of using the drag and drop feature might work better for you, since it should go back to same folder location if you change multiple items. Again, drag and drop is for dragging and dropping from windows explorer/desktop is this what you were trying to do? If you don’t see the options I’m talking about, try going into TV shows or movies, it could be for specific types of media…. if you still don’t have the same options, try signing into myPlex online and acessing your server that way, so you know FOR SURE it is using the Plex/Web interface – plus networks can do weird things, and so can computers, since 127.0.0…. is ur internal IP for your computer, the myplex should access it using the external or local IP address that is actual network access.

hopefully that helps some – ben

Looks like I’ll have to switch to XMBC or something similar. I’ve got absolutely no plans to upgrade my media center PC to Windows 8.

  85. OzAy March 6th, 2013 6:42 am

    Hello,
Does anyone have Netgear ReadyNAS server with the PLEX add-on on installed out there?
    I have a ReadyNAS server and I used plex add-on plug-in.
But PMS doesn’t get an metadata any file. (pic, poster, cover etc). When I used from pc, pms got everyting.
    Version 0.9.7.12.407

  86. elan March 6th, 2013 2:26 pm

@LooksLikeImHosed: Not sure what you mean, the current Plex for Windows (Laika) works fine on Windows 7, and the upcoming Plex/Home Theater which is beta works great on Windows 7 too.

  87. OzAy March 7th, 2013 12:36 am

I want to use only ReadyNAS server. I loads Plex plug-in and it works correctly. When I add a new part (tv shows, music etc.)and select a directory, pms works for the loading and matching metadata (cover for music, film or poster). But not found anything. I don’t understand why never find anything. I used refresh button from plex/web button but not change.
How can I load or select cover, poster for my media files?
What is the setup pms for this operation?

When I use from my pc which is run windows 7, every function works correctly.

    Netgear ReadyNAS (ARM chip)
Plex server version is 0.9.7.12.407 for ARM (last version)

    Thanks for your helps,

    (sorry for my language)

  88. Quadwarriior March 9th, 2013 6:29 am

Great product. Problem is that external subtitles stopped working on ios plattforms. Pretty bad considering apple products were the place plex started off.
I’m not sure if all experience this, but a lot of us do. Works perfect when degradimg to older versions. But then it doesnt work good with my windows products. Please solve this. Thanls for a great product and keep it up! :).

Also, xbmc has a plugin to direct downlpad subtitles from many pages through media center woth a click. Why not add that feauture? Auto download is not that good.

  89. elan March 9th, 2013 11:39 pm

@Quadwarriior ~ should be resolved in next PMS release (current preview one if you have PlexPass). Some OS X systems were missing a font we thought would/should be there.

  90. Talitha March 12th, 2013 2:46 am

An absolutley stunning product. Exactly what I need..
Sadly, without playlists I can’t use it..
I’m guessing a playlist feature is impossible or you would have already done it?
I’ll keep checking back from time to time in hope though. :)
Nice work though.. very slick interface..

  91. xain09 March 12th, 2013 9:25 am

    Many thanks again!

    @Talitha: nothing’s impossible, just limited time :)

  93. rrabbit March 26th, 2013 12:35 am

I’m using WinRT and was able to Play most videos without stuck.. unfortunately, since last release I’m not able to Play smoothly anymore.

Is there any particular configuration setup on Transcoding to make it thru?

    Thx

  94. Nicthalon March 31st, 2013 12:27 pm

Definitely hope you completely pull down and resubmit when it goes from Beta to live, since the Play Store seems to be loaded with useless reviews about a beta. >.<

  95. tuk April 13th, 2013 12:02 pm

I cant get the plex win8 app to see the pms server running on the same pc — any ideas? thx

tried localhost, 127.0.0.1 and pc’s ip
